The Academy of Pediatric warned us in regard to the potentials for many negative effects in regards to social media and our young children and teens. Cyber-bullying as well as increased “Facebook depression” are a few terms many are familiar with. This same risk potential is there for adults.

Mental Health and Social Media
Ways in which our mental health is compromised by social media.
It’s addictive
There is convincing evidence that social media is addictive. A recent review from Nottingham University took a look back over much earlier research targeting psychological characteristics, and direct social media usage. In regards specially to ‘Facebook Addiction’…we see many addictive characteristics of addiction, such as the neglect of ones personal life, obsession or mental preoccupation, act of escapism, increased mood fluctuation, increased tolerance and attempts at concealing addictive behaviors, are present in regards to some individuals who are on (social media networks) excessively.” This leads to mental health issues.
Studies confirmed that individuals undergo withdrawal: Studies have shown that when they stopped the use of internet and social media they were faced with increased anxiety, and psychological symptoms related to withdrawal when they stopped. This goes for all internet use, not just the social media outlets. A recent follow-up study finds when people stopped using, they undergo physiological and mental health changes.
Self-Esteem and Mental Health
Everyone has their fare share of insecurities, many we speak openly about and many we would prefer to keep to self. Comparing yourself to other people on social media by tracking and stalking their amazing, aesthetically perfect profile on Instagram or staying up to date on others relationship status with Facebook will not work well in regards to having a secure sense of self.
Human connection
As humans, it’s important for us that we are able to communicate and create connections with each other. It can very hard to do this if we are glued to the tv or computer, or our phones. We compare ourselves to others who are made over and look unrealistic. We then get upset and sad thinking we can never look that good.
