To be properly diagnosed, the following criteria must be met:
Symptoms must last approximately 2 weeks or longer. Feeling depressed most days if not every day.

- A decrease in interest in the hobbies or things you found pleasure in.
- Loss or gain of weight. Little to no appetite or inability to stop eating.
- Difficulty sleeping and staying asleep.
- Restless and feeling lethargic and slow.
- Loss of energy.
- Feeling self pity, increased guilt and not worthy.
- You find your unable to remain focused and make clear decisions.
- Suicidal thoughts or wanting to not be here any longer.

Chronic low level of constant sadness.

Alternating periods of intense mania followed with depression.
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Mood changes depending on the seasons.
