Therapy is client driven. It is conducted in a collaborative method. The client and therapist work hand in hand to determine the length of treatment. If your in treatment close to a year, it is my opinion that it may not be effectively working. Understanding my approach is important. I take a very unique approach to therapy. Other therapist have different opinions. I conduct 1.5 to 2 hour long sessions. This is not traditional like others who conduct 50 min sessions.
By extending the amount of time for each session you are able to get more work done. Many clients are unfairly given a short amount of time in therapy. Clients feel like a number to the therapist. You leave feeling little to no work was done.

Yes absolutely individual therapy works. Get honest with yourself. Let ego take a backseat. Change is now able to flow in. Therapy works when the client is open minded. Understanding the role that conditioning from your childhood plays is key. Your perspective on life is a combination of how you see the world. If you were raised in a toxic home, your challenge in therapy is to see yourself and others with compassion and understanding. You will have a difference of opinion. You will decrease your anger. The belief system that you are right and others are wrong will slip away.
Research proves that psychotherapy does result in fewer relapses of those conditions related to anxiety, depression, fear, unhealthy attachment, etc. The positive result of doing the work of self evaluation and increased awareness has lasting effects. These effects go well beyond your time in therapy.
