Affordable Counseling
What do we consider to be affordable? Money is tight and people do not have a lot to throw around. A hard-working middle-class American would struggle at the idea of having to spend $180-$200 a week for therapy. However, that seems to be the going rate for a 50 minute session with a licensed clinician. So many people need help yet what exactly can be done in 15 minutes?
My belief is that very little to no work can effectively be done yet you’re paying a lot of money to spin your wheels. What happens if you get three sessions in and you can’t afford to continue therapy? You could leave worse off. You feel that much more vulnerable.
What Affordable Counseling Looks Like
As your clinician affordable cost effective therapy looks to me like you’re spending enough time up to two hours a week paying less than you would for an individual session 50 minute in length. An ethical therapist would also work on a sliding scale to help me the need on an individual basis.
At High Expectations it is never my intention to have a client come in dealing with a mood disorders such as depression and anxiety only to increase that anxiety or depression because they can’t financially get the help they need. Absolutely I am providing a service and it does pay for food in my house but I believe everything could be negotiated and everybody can meet in the middle.
Affordable Counseling
In counseling I charge $130 flat rate for an hour and a half to two hours of therapy per session. That averages $65 an hour. I would much rather spend $130 for an hour and a half to two hours of really good solid work then jumping into an office for 50 minutes and leaving having paid an arm and a leg.
The problem with the 50 minute session is that it takes a long time to see change. Your in therapy for months. With the approach I take I would be surprised to see you with me still after eight sessions. The idea is that you know yourself the best and I am a collaborative teacher or someone who is able to look outside of the blinders that we all wear in life.
Affordable counseling is the wave of the future. It needs to be accessible for all people whether they are on insurance or not.
