5 Tips for Managing Your Mental Health This Summer
5 tips for managing your mental health this summer. The summer season is a time that’s typically associated with happiness and freedom. For many, it’s a break from the hustle and bustle of work or school. But for some, it can be a time of increased anxiety and stress. If you find yourself struggling to keep your mental health in check during the summer months, you’re not alone. The goal is that we find our alignment at all times. That we can get to a place where we can be at peace and harmony. That our insides match our outsides.
Here are a few things to help you mind your mental health and enjoy a happy and healthy summer.
- Get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine
One of the best things about summer is the opportunity to get outside and soak up some vitamin D. Spend time in your backyard, go for a walk in the park, or take a trip to the beach. Just make sure to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated! The benefits of being outdoors is uncountable. It’s vital for your body, your blood cells, and also your immune system. Your body absorbs minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. You need sunlight to be in good health. It doesn’t take much. Even just getting out for 15 minutes, 3 times a week, is a great place to start. During the winter you may need to get out more.
- Make time for yourself
With all the fun summer activities, it’s important to make sure you’re taking care of yourself, too. Schedule some “me time” into your week to relax and recharge. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a yoga class, or getting a massage, do something that makes you happy. Most of us think we are being selfish when we focus on ourselves. The most important thing you can do is find our own alignment first. How can we be of service to others if we can’t take time for self care. If this is an area where that you need to explore then try new hobbies, take an online class. Do something your passionate about.
- Stay connected
It’s easy to get caught up in your own summer plans and forget to stay in touch with your loved ones. Make an effort to reach out to your friends and family, even if it’s just a quick text or phone call. We can easily become isolated and then wonder why we feel so depressed and disconnected. I love the idea of Meetup groups. This is a place to find other locals that share common interest. Rekindle old friendships. You will be amazed to see that many feel the same way as you.
- Keep a routine
A change in season can throw off your entire routine, but it’s important to try and stick to a schedule as best you can. Wake up and go to bed at the same time each day, eat regular meals, and exercise regularly. We thrive when we have a daily routine. This is how good habits are formed. When the world around us becomes chaotic we often feel inside flustered and create lots of anxiety. Stay disciplined in daily routines. Just because it is the summer does not mean we are allowed to slack on self care. I often suggest to my clients that the first thing in the morning they should do is meditate. By doing this they are setting up their day being mindful.
- Seek help if you need it
If you’re struggling to cope with your mental health, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. Talk to your doctor or a therapist about your concerns. They can offer guidance and support to help you get through tough times. A counselor can help you to brainstorm ideas and approaches to implementing healthy routine and positive habits in your life. At High Expectations Counseling we are here to help you create a life full of joy and happiness.
Summer is a time to enjoy the warm weather and have fun, but it’s also a time to be mindful of your mental health. With a little bit of effort, you can have a happy and healthy summer.
